Sliding Yoke — Mahindra Maximo — Description

A sliding yoke (also known as a slip yoke) in the Mahindra Maximo’s driveline is a propeller shaft component that connects the propeller/drive shaft to the transmission output (or companion shaft) and allows the shaft to change length as the vehicle moves.

📌 What It Is

  • It is a splined yoke that slides back and forth on matching splines of the transmission or companion shaft. This slip action allows the driveline to adjust length as the suspension moves up and down.

  • The splines let the yoke rotate with the shaft while still sliding along it to absorb changes in distance between the transmission and rear axle.

⚙️ Primary Functions

  • Length Compensation: As the suspension compresses or rebounds, the distance between the transmission and rear differential shifts slightly. The sliding yoke slides in/out on the splines to compensate for this change.

  • Smooth Power Transfer: While allowing axial movement, it continues to transmit torque from the gearbox into the propeller shaft without interrupting drive.

  • Reduces Stress & Wear: This sliding action helps prevent binding in the driveline and reduces stress on universal joints and other drivetrain parts.

🔩 Where It Fits

  • The sliding yoke is found at the front end of the propeller shaft, engaging with the transmission output or companion shaft in rear‑drive vehicles like the Mahindra Maximo.

  • It works in conjunction with universal joints (U‑joints) to allow for both rotational torque transfer and axial movement.
